As you may be aware, Nunyara and make use of cloud IT infrastructure that is provided, maintained and hosted by Telstra. The systems hold our client and corporate data.

These systems are critical to the provision of health care services, and without them we are unable to provide services to the standard we require to ensure the health and safety of our patients.

On Saturday 1 June 2024, an outage occurred at Telstra’s CSX Gen2 data centre that took all of these systems offline. We are informed by Telstra that this occurred not only in relation to Nunyara systems, but by all of their customers using that service.

We first became aware of the outage on 3 June 2024, when our teams were unable to properly access the computer network. After significant efforts to escalate the matter between 3 and 5 June 20204, we were able to make Telstra aware of the significant impact that the outage has had on our ability to service some of the most vulnerable members of the Australian population, and they have been working to bring our systems back online.

Ultimately, the safety of our patients has to be our primary concern, and as we are not able to confidently provide healthcare without access to clinical notes and systems, we had to make the difficult decision to suspend the operation of our clinics whilst we worked to get new systems up and running.

We regret that this situation has arisen, however it is one that was not caused by Nunyara, nor is it one we have the ability to resolve without Telstra’s action

We are grateful for your understanding and support at this time.

The Elder Care Support program is designed to deliver Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aged Care support, connection, and coordination. SAWCAN staff, Shellander and Rianna attended NACCHO’s ‘train the trainer’ Elder Care Support session earlier this year and rolled the training out to their members last week. Stakeholders in the Aged Care space attended the three-day training which allowed for ACCHOs to speak directly with key stakeholders on issues affecting our Elders. It was a great opportunity to bring the SAWCAN Elder Care Support staff together to discuss the future of the program and how to best support our Elders. *Excerpt and photo thanks to the NACCHO Communique

NACCHO NDIS Ready Conference

On the 7th to the 9th of June the NDIS Workforce had the opportunity to attend the NACCHO NDIS Ready Yarning Circle on Larrakia Country (Darwin). The event was for ACCHOs and AMSs (Aboriginal Medical Services) who are providing services or supports in the NDIS space. The aim of the Yarning Circle was for everyone to gather and share experiences to overcome barriers. The workforce that represented their health service includes Rachel Ware – Port Lincoln Aboriginal Health Service, Rianna Mundy – Tullawon Health Service, Shilloh Peel – Yadu Aboriginal Health Corporation, Simon Schuppan – Nunyara Whyalla Aboriginal Health Service.

Our regional NDIS Workforce showed great leadership, being involved and vocally sharing our experiences and learnings. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to speak to mob from across the nation about NDIS – this included people from Pilbara WA, Geraldton WA, Alice Springs NT and have built great networks.

SAWCAN had the opportunity to present on what the Aboriginal disAbility Alliance model is, and how we work in together across the region. This was such a great opportunity for our communities to share all the amazing work we are doing in this space. It was very clear from our presentation that our region are leaders in this space! This was evident through the amount of other ACCHOs and AMS’ from other regions coming up to us asking lots of NDIS related questions and wanting to know more how we collectively work together. Some of our team members have even been invited to go up to places like Broome so we can support and teach their workforce! We’ve also been contacted by Mob in Geraldton to support their training. We will meet with this team later this week.

The NDIS teams, CEOs and other workers at our ACCHOs should be so proud of all the hard work they have put into this project so far.
The regional NDIS team walked away feeling very proud of the work we are achieving as a collective and are feeling revitalized to continue to work hard in the future for our communities.
A big thank you to NACCHO for letting us be a part of this conference and allowing us to present our Model of working.

SAWCAN Highly Commended in Category 1 of the 2022 Indigenous Governance Awards

The South Australian West Coast ACCHO Network has been highly commended for outstanding examples of Aboriginal-led governance on a national level. On Wednesday the 8th of June 2022 at the ICC Sydney, the Indigenous Governance Awards ceremony, hosted by Reconciliation Australia and the BHP Foundation, acknowledged and celebrated outstanding examples of governance in Indigenous led non-incorporated initiatives, projects, or within small to large businesses. SAWCAN were one of nine Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisations / initiatives from around the nation who were shortlisted as finalists in the 2022 Indigenous Governance Awards. Whilst we didn’t win, SAWCAN were one of two initiatives who were given high commendations from the judging panel. Romlie Mokak, Indigenous Governance Awards judging panel member and Productivity Commissioner said “the fact that you have been able to, in such a short amount of time, change the way that governments themselves saw their program objectives and you were able to step into that space and not only speak to it but re-negotiate what that looked like for your mob, I think speaks volumes about the strength of your collaboration and the value that others see in it as well, including government.” Left to right: Karen Mundine, CEO Reconciliation Australia; Janine Mohamed, CEO Lowitja Institute; Donna Murray, CEO Indigenous Allied Health Australia; Cindy Zbierski, CEO Nunyara Aboriginal Health Service; Zell Dodd, CEO Yadu Health Aboriginal Corporation; Warren Clements, Public Health Manager Port Lincoln Aboriginal Health Service, Polly Paerata SAWCAN Secretariat, Leeroy Bilney COO Tullawon Health Service and Romlie Mokak Commissioner with the Productivity Commission SAWCAN is an act of self-determination and has worked tirelessly over the past 18 months to create long-lasting and systemic change for the Aboriginal communities across the Eyre and Far West Coast. SAWCAN Secretariat Polly Paerata explains, “Our strength is in our collective voice. We work together as a region to ensure that health and social programs coming into our region are not only based on what our community’s need, but they are appropriately funded and centred around Aboriginal ways of being, doing and knowing.” The inaugural SAWCAN Chair and CEO of Nunyara Aboriginal Health Service, Cindy Zbierski said, “The Reconciliation Australia Indigenous Governance Awards showcased the best of the best in front of peers and mainstream organisations. It demonstrates and evidences the outstanding work Aboriginal organisations and community-led initiatives apply to achieve exemplary Governance from an expected standardised compliance perspective, and importantly, the focus on cultural considerations, inclusivity, and knowledge.” Reflecting on the rigorous awards process, Director of SAWCAN and CEO of Yadu Health, Zell Dodd said, “It was truly an experience I will never forget; I have already encouraged others to put forward their governance model and be proud to showcase this. Everyone is a winner for being there.” SAWCAN would like to extend their congratulations to all category winners and fellow finalists. Click here to hear more about our story.
